Ek bly 'n Boer.

Ek staan met my gebuigde hoof voor die Almagtige
my oe is gesluit in stilte neem ek my groot besluit
dat niks en niemand my valslik sal probeer oortuig
van my ware Boere status en van my trotse eer

My geloof en hoop is gevestig op God die Almagtige
Hy wie die Boere die groot oorwinning by Bloedrivier
laat seëvier en alleenlik deur God se groot genade

Daarom is ek vol vertroue as 'n trotse Boer dat God
die ware en werklike anker is vir die ware Boerevolk
as die uur kom in nood vir die opregte Boer en Volk.



Boere vrees nie.

Al skeur die AK-47 koeëls my Boere liggaam oop
Of ‘n spies en panga dalk my Boere hart deurboor
En die houe van knopkierie op my liggaam neer reën
Sodat ek as ‘n Boer sterf vir ons stryd na Boere vryheid

Sal my siel tot rus kom oor my Boerevolk in hulle stryd
Wie is soos jy my Boerevolk “ja” soos julle my Boere
Sal jy ook jou lewe gee in die hoop na ons Boere vryheid
Want wanneer jy as ‘n Boer eers vrees dan het jy verloor
Ons Boere was nog nooit bang of bevrees vir ‘n oormag

Al kom hulle aan soos die sand van die see in menigte
Dan vrees ons nie maar het ons diep berusting in ons harte
Ons Boere se stille vertroue en hoop is op ons God gerig
Wie vrees dan die AK-47 gewere of die panga en spiese

Ons Boere is almal bestem om te lewe en ook te sterwe
Die roemryke geskiedenis van ons Boere is ‘n bewys
Bewys dat ons Boere nie sal gaan lê maar sal voortgaan
In ons stryd na ons vryheid “ ‘n toekoms van ware hoop”



Dis alweer die einde van nog 'n maan se jaar
Nog 'n Dagboek vol geskryf word nou tot niet verklaar
Soveel dinge nagejaag tog soveel ongedaan
Te veel keer met die stroom geswem te min keer sterk gestaan

Maar more bring 'n nuwe maan 'n nuwe Dagboek leeg
Ek maak my vry van gister dis hoe ons aanbeweeg
Ek staar na al die blaaie so skoon en onversier
Ek weet dat ek dit vol moet skryf met plig maar ook plesier

Daar is die jaar se eerste maand om alles reg te ruk
Jou hart se laaie skoon te maak en stof daar uit te skud
Februarie kom so gou die eerste maand verby
En voor jy weet gaan nog 'n jaar begin momentum kry

Maak seker dat jy elke dag ten volle gaan ontgin
Moenie hals oor kop besluit maak seker jy besin
Handel liewer elke dag die dag se dinge af
Want gister se gewone taak is more net 'n las

As Maart die jaar tot rypheid bring en alles vrugte dra
Blaai weer deur jou Dagboek en vra jouself die vrae
Stuur ek die jaar met groot sukses na alles wat ek wou
Of het ek reeds voor Wintertyd oor van my dae berou

Nou's die eerste kwart verby en Winter voor die deur
En soos die blare kleure kry het ek opnuut geleer
Dat selfs met groot omsigtigheid ek nie oor als beskik
Daar's blaaie in my Dagboek wat my tot stilte ruk

Dis dan wanneer jy stil-alleen weer by jouself moet kom
Moet briek aandraai en vra vir raad en krag gaan soek by Hom
Ek loer weer oor my skouer en sien die enkelspoor
Daar's dae wat ek gedra was toe ek wou moed verloor

En dan's ons diep in Juniemaand 'n halwe jaar gedaan
Ek lees weer deur my Dagboek en kry so bietjie skaam
Te veel dae het ek niks geskryf en niks gedoen of sê
Om net so bietjie liefde in ander te belê

Maar voor die deur is Lentetyd en alles word weer nuut
Ek bid vir nuwe lewenslus maar laat U wil geskied
Daar is 'n nuwe ritme in alles rondom my
My hartklop is in harmonie my Dagboek vol en bly

Oktobermaand is alles mooi en al die bome bod
Soveel waarvoor ek dankbaar is ons dien 'n Grootse God
Die laaste kwart se blaaie is skoon en onbeskryf
En nou moet ek opnuut besin oor of ek swem of dryf

Daar is nog soveel dinge wat ek die jaar wou doen
Die dae raak min dis Somertyd en amper Feesseisoen
Koorsagtig skryf ek blaaie vol van take ongedaan
Ek wil nie nog 'n jaar afsluit met goed wat oor moet staan

Jou dagboek is jou eie die rekord van jou jaar
So skryf hom vol van dade wat jy vir goed bewaar
Doen jou plig met vreugde en diepe dankbaarheid
Want voor jy weet word nog 'n jaar se Dagboek afgesluit... Sx


Skatkamer van ons Boerevolk.

In die skatkamers van ons Boerevolk lê daar 'n
skatkis vol Boere geskiedenis
Waar 'n Boerevolk dit eers moet ontdek om die
waarde daarvan te kan waardeer

Dat die waarde van ons eie Geskiedenis so uniek
is dat geen goud of silwer dit kan koop
Dit is ryk aan ons eie Boere se trotse geskiedenis
waarop elke Boere hart trots kan wees

Boerevolk maak die skatkis oop dat die wêreld ons
eie trotse Boere geskiedenis kan sien
Van 'n trotse Boerevolk met sy eie bestaansreg as
'n Boerevolk met hulle geskiedenis.



Versugting na genade.

Slaaplose nagte vol verwarring
met koorsagtige sweet
Kwel ek my oor die Boerevolk
met versugtinge
Êrens het ons geval , verdwaal
en afgedwaal

Antwoorde bly my ontwyk en ek
ek soek na 'n uitweg
Hoekom en waarom moet ons as
Volk so gelouter word
Waarom is ons , 'n skouspel van
'n Volksmoord

Het ons Boerevolk koud geword
die waarheid verloën
Klou ons vas aan drome met vol
geslepe praatjies
Raadpleeg niemand dan God in sy
binnekamer na Bo

Wat is God se wil vir ons as 'n
Boerevolk
Skop ons dalk teen die prikkels
van die waarheid
Verseker sal elke knieë buig en

Dat ons God verlaat het en agter
leuens aan hoereer

As die Boerevolk saam Brul.

Wanneer die môrestond die Boere hart
verhelder in hoop
En hulle die sorge van die lewe vir ’n
oomblik vergeet
En hulle die hulpgeroep van hulle mede
broers hoor

En die Boere se harte begin saamsmelt
soos een Volk
Gaan die vyande van die Boervolk dit nie
kan verbreek
Eendrag van die Boere maak ’n mag van
’n vaste eenheid

In die dag sal die Boere soos jong leeus

Wie het behae in ons as Boerevolk en wie kan ons
beskerm en ontferm soos U

Ek is moeg oor die sinnelose moorde en verkragtings

Krankheid wil die oorhand kry maar my gees dwing my
in ’n ware hoop

Eens vreedsame paradys.

In die Paradys van die Boerevolk seil
jy rond in jou vyand gewaad
Met jou verleiding het jy een Sot laat
glo in jou valse geslepe vryheid
Deur die Sot en jou verleiding het die
Paradys ’n rowerspelonk geword

’n Eens Vreedsame Paradys sonder enige
gruwel moorde en verkragtings
Maar julle het dit so verander na ’n
speelplek vir al julle slange
Vroom in jou donker gewaad seil jy
om Boerevolk te verwoes

die onskuldige Boere uit
Slang, hulle bloed wat nie jou vrugte van

The Blood River Heritage

 

Welcome to the official Blood River Heritage Site

The Blood River Heritage site, near Dundee in KwaZulu-Natal, is probably one of the most unique battlefields in South-Africa. On 16 December 1838, 464 Voortrekkers and their servants under command of Andries Pretorius defeated King Dingane’s approximately 10 000 impi under command of Ndlela kaSompisi.

What can you see?

The Voortrekker Monument has been managing the site since 2002. Visitors can look forward to an interesting visit to the various monuments on the site and the museum and gift shop. The three star lodge with 4 en-suite bedrooms as well as the Trekker restaurant offers rest and food for body and Soul.

The Battle of Blood River, KZN

After the murder of Piet Retief and his men by the Zulus on 6 February 1838, the Bloukrans murders and the defeat of the Potgieter and Uys’ commandos at Italeni, it was inevitable that the Voortrekkers would take the initiative and launch a Counter attack against the Zulus.

Andries Pretorius was chosen as the leader of the Voortrekkers. He started organising a commando in November 1838. They gathered at the Tugela River on 28 November and departed on 3 December 1838. With 64 wagons, 463 Voortrekker men (there were no women involved in the battle), Alexander Biggar and a large´number of Christianised Zulus and Coloureds, with two (possibly three) canons, they started moving towards uMgungundlovo, the stronghold of the Zulu king in the eMakhosini valley.

By 9 December they were in the region of Wasbank where they made a Covenant with God under the leadership of Sarel Cilliers. They undertook to commemorate the day eternally as a Sabbath and erect a church in is His name should God help them vanquish the Zulus. The covenant was repeated every evening until 15 December.

On Saturday 15 December the Trekkers reached the Ncome River when Scouts sighted the Zulu horde. Pretorius decided to draw a laager to the west of the Ncome River on the edge of a deep gorge in the river. The proximity of a hill (now Vegkop) and a hippopotamus hole next to the river, would shelter the laager. The wagons were fastened securely together and branches and ready-made fighting palisades were fastened onto the openings under the wagons. The canons (old Grietjie and a ships’ canon belonging to Pretorius) were placed in strategic openings in the laager. About 900 oxen and 600 horses were kept inside the laager.


The night of 15 December was pitch dark and a heavy mist covered the area. Sentries were posted and lanterns were hung from the ends of whip poles. It is speculated that the Zulus possibly wanted to launch a night attack but got lost on the dark and mist. By daybreak the approaching Zulu horde could clearly be heard. The Voortrekkers did not fire until the Zulus were very near to the wagon “wall” and then they attacked with guns and canon fire. The Zulus attacked the laager repeatedly and were unsuccessful. After two hours, when the third massive attack had been repelled, Pretorius sent out a commando force on horseback to confront the Zulus directly. Another part of the Zulu horde was bombarded with canon fire. Death and confusion ensued amongst the Zulu warriors. Some of their regiments started falling back and the commando and canon fire gradually split them in two. One section fled to the river where they were decimated crossing it – from there the name Blood River. Many fled into the gorge where they could not move and the short distance gunfire caused havoc. The Zulus began falling back in every direction and were pursued by groups of  horsemen.

Three Voortrekkers were wounded while thousands of Zulus died during the battle .By the afternoon the battle was over. The Voortrekkers held a thanksgiving service in the laager on the evening of 16 December. A few days after the battle the commando departed for uMgungundlovu and they arrived to find Dingane’s stronghold burnt to the ground.A commemoration service was held on the site of the battle on 16 December 1866 during which participants of the Battle of Blood River in 1838 made a stone cairn in the centre of the laager. Thereafter the Day of the Covenant was commemorated

sporadically at the site until it became an annual event. The church of the Covenant, as undertaken when making the Covenant in 1838, was completed in Pietermaritzburg in 1842. Today this battle which took place at the Ncome River, is referred to as the Battle of Blood River / Ncome.

The battle of Blood River is depicted in the broader context of the Great Trek in the museum.

The Granite Jawbone Wagon

The monument was completed in 1939 but could only be unveiled in 1947 because of the Second World War (1939-1945). The wagon was initially placed over the stone cairn that was erected in the middle of the laager with a window inside it through which the lighted rock cairn could be seen. It was moved to its current position in 1971 when the wagon laager was erected. The wagon is symbolically seen as the home, fortress and church of the Voortrekkers.

 


The Pyramid-shaped Beacon

The pyramid shaped beacon was erected during the Voortrekker Centenary in 1938 and is a “Covenant Renewal Beacon”.

 

The Stone Cairn

The stone cairn is the earliest memorial on the site. It was erected on 16 December 1866 when 40-50 wagons gathered to commemorate the battle of 1838.

 

The Bronze Wagon Laager

The wagon laager was erected as a replica of the original laager and was not meant to be a monument. This wagon laager was erected and unveiled on 16 December in 1971 on the site of the original laager of 1838. This reconstruction of a wagon laager is unique in the world. The wagons were constructed from wrought iron, covered with bronze and stand on concrete foundations. Each wagon is identical and has been modelled on the “Johanna van der Merwe” centenary commemoration wagon. The wagons in the laager without tents were used as ammunition wagons. To reconstruct the battle palisades that were used to keep the Zulu warriors out, wattle wood was used. Replica lanterns, fastened to long whip handles were placed at each wagon. The lights can be switched on request so that overnight visitors may have a preview of what the Voortrekkers experienced on the evening before the battle.

 

The Ships Cannon

Andries Pretorius brought this ship’s cannon with him from the Cape. It is mounted on a light undercarriage with two wheels. The cannon was placed facing east across the river. When loaded with shrapnel, pieces of pot iron and stones, it could fire a distance of at least 3 000 metres.

 








The Cannons

According to certain historians there were only two cannons at the battle of Blood River and according to others at least three. The northern opening of the laager served as a portal through which the Voortrekker force could go out and follow the Zulu forces. The ship’s cannon “Grietjie”, on a home-made carriage was placed here. The cannon has a range of 300 – 400 metres. The original cannon currently stands in the museum of the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria. A second replica of the cannon “Grietjie” stands on the spot where the big cannon stood during the battle. It is not known what this cannon looked like.
 

How To Get There

The site is located 43 km from Dundee, 24 km from Nqutu and 73 km from Vryheid. This site is approached via a gravel road (De Jager’s Drift) off the R33 between Vryheid and Dundee. The site is sign posted with Blood River, Ncome or Blood River eNcome signs.
